If Scottie Scheffler ever had any doubts about his ability to seal the deal at the 2022 Masters, it never really showed. Not while he was on the course at least.
After the coveted green jacket had been added to his wardrobe, Scheffler shared that he “cried like a baby” in anticipation of his Sunday round.
“I was so stressed out. I didn’t know what to do,” said Scheffler.
“I was sitting there telling Meredith, I don’t think I’m ready for this. I’m not ready, I don’t feel like I’m ready for this kind of stuff, and I just felt overwhelmed.”
The 25-year old credited that discussion with his wife, and their shared faith, for calming his nerves.
“She told me, ‘Who are you to say that you are not ready? Who am I to say that I know what’s best for my life?’ And so what we talked about is that God is in control and that the Lord is leading me; and if today is my time, it’s my time. And if I shot 82 today, you know, somehow I was going to use it for His glory. Gosh, it was a long morning. It was long.”
But by the time his 2:40 tee time came around, Scheffler seemed to be his normal self. Calm and collected.

And why wouldn’t he be? In addition to his strong faith and amazing support system, he happens to be the best player in the world.
But plenty of players with more experience and heftier resumes than Scheffler have let the weight of the green jacket overwhelm them.
Just two months ago Scheffler had never won on the PGA Tour. The total is currently four.
During his amazing run, we’ve all had a chance to get to know Scottie Scheffler just a little bit better.
He’s a tough competitor on the course who rarely displays more than a shrug of the shoulders or a quick laugh with his caddie, Ted Scott. But he’s not afraid to let his guard down outside the ropes.
He’s an anomaly of sorts – an old soul with a touch of goofiness.
Scottie Scheffler doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously. It’s refreshing.
But his fellow competitors had better take him plenty seriously. Scottie Scheffler is not going anywhere.
No, he won’t continue to win at his current rate. No golfer ever has over an extended period of time. Not Nicklaus. Not Woods. Nobody.
At golf’s highest level, everyone loses more than they win.
But Scheffler seems to have a perspective that very few players have, especially at just 25 years old.
And now he has eliminated the burden of having the major monkey placed on his back. The “best player without a major” will never be assigned to Scottie Scheffler.
The next major on the schedule is the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The course has previously hosted four PGA Championships and three US Opens.
The 2015 Big 12 Championship was also held at Southern Hills. The individual title was won by a kid from Texas named Scottie Scheffler.
