Pinehurst Resort is embarking on a new chapter with Pinehurst Sandmines, a 900-acre development anchored by the recently unveiled Pinehurst No. 10 course. But Sandmines is more than just a new golf course; it’s a homage to the land’s rich past and a glimpse into the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.
The name “Sandmines” is a fitting tribute to the area’s history. For decades, sand was mined from the land, shipped by rail across the country, and used in countless construction projects, including North Carolina’s iconic Blue Ridge Parkway. The mining operations ceased in the 1970s, leaving behind a unique topography of rugged dunes and mounds that have since been reclaimed by nature.
While Pinehurst No. 10, which will open on April 3rd, takes center stage, Sandmines represents much more than just another course. The vast, mostly undeveloped acreage offers a blank canvas for future development. Possibilities include an additional 18-hole course, a short course, a new clubhouse, and even guest cottages. This expansion has the potential to significantly enhance the Pinehurst Resort experience.
“A year ago, we were excited to announce that Tom Doak would begin carving a new era of Pinehurst golf on this exceptional property,” says Bob Dedman Jr., CEO of Pinehurst Resort in a press release. “Today, we take another step forward into our continued evolution with a nod to what came before.”
The natural beauty of the Sandmines landscape is a key aspect of its appeal. The dramatic, sloping northwest ridge provides a stunning backdrop for Pinehurst No. 10, while the remaining wooded areas offer a serene escape. This harmonious blend of manicured course and natural environment is sure to resonate with golfers and nature enthusiasts alike.
Pinehurst Sandmines marks a significant moment in the resort’s history. It’s a chance to celebrate the land’s heritage while setting the stage for a future filled with exciting possibilities. With its unique history, stunning scenery, and potential for growth, Pinehurst Sandmines promises to be a captivating destination for years to come.
