With The Masters quickly approaching, Rory McIlroy has offered some insight into repairs and changes to Augusta National Golf Club following the damage caused by Hurricane Helene last fall. The storm resulted in the loss of numerous trees and led to the re-seeding of four greens, including the iconic par-3 16th hole.
Despite the changes, McIlroy is certain that the course will remain as challenging as ever. “At the end of the day, it’s still Augusta,” he said. “The greens that were re-seeded? You wouldn’t know unless someone told you. They’ve done a phenomenal job getting everything back to where it should be.”
During a recent practice session, McIlroy noted that while the course has undergone some changes, its playability is essentially the same as ever. “Yeah, a few trees are missing here and there, but the way the course plays, the strategy, the challenges—it all feels the same,” he explained.
McIlroy has also recently shared that he isn’t completely healthy, revealing that a nagging elbow issue has affected his preparation. “It’s not something I’m overly concerned about, but it’s there,” he said. “It’s just a little discomfort, and I’m working through it. Obviously, you want to be in peak condition for Augusta, so I’m doing everything I can to make sure it doesn’t affect me.”
The four-time major champion, who is still seeking his first green jacket, emphasized that Augusta’s nuances are still as demanding as ever. “You always have to be precise here,” he said. “If anything, the changes remind you that this place is constantly evolving, but the DNA of Augusta National never really changes.”
With the Masters coming up next week, McIlroy is focused on his preparation. “I feel good about my game,” he said. “It’s just about putting it all together that one week in April.”
As he continues chasing the Career Grand Slam, McIlroy’s ability to manage Augusta’s challenges and his own physical condition will be key to his success.
The 2025 Masters Tournament will take place from April 10 to 13 at Augusta National Golf Club. Don’t miss out on the Southern Fairways Masters Contest.
