From the moment you pull into Sweetens Cove you realize this isn’t just another round of golf. The gravel crunches under your tires, “the shed” quickly comes into view, and suddenly you feel like you’ve arrived at a place that’s part golf course, part pilgrimage.
Sweetens Cove, nestled in a valley outside South Pittsburg, Tennessee, is more than just nine holes – it’s a celebration of what golf can be. Designed by Rob Collins and Tad King, this little patch of ground has grown into a destination that golfers from around the country feel compelled to experience at least once. It’s less a “golf club” and more a living, breathing community – a movement where everyone is welcome and the only rules are to respect the course, respect your fellow golfers, and to have as much fun as possible.
The All-Day Experience
Sweetens Cove uses an all-day pass system, which means once you’re in, the course is yours. Play nine, play eighteen, play thirty-six or more — as many as you can fit before the sun dips behind the adjacent hills. Some players turn it into a personal marathon, seeing how many loops they can get in before dark.
And if you’re playing alone? Don’t worry – Sweetens is one of the most welcoming golf communities you’ll ever find. Singles are regularly invited to join groups, and not just foursomes. You might end up in a group of eight or ten, because at Sweetens, if everyone’s having fun, that’s what matters. Faster groups can easily play through – or around – without it feeling rushed. The flow is surprisingly smooth, more like a gathering of friends than a tee sheet.
The Course
For all the good vibes, it’s the golf course that keeps people coming back. Sweetens Cove is a nine-hole masterwork – bold, quirky, endlessly strategic, and, most importantly, fun.
The course opens with two par-5s bookending a beautifully framed par-4, giving players a mix of risk and reward right from the start. From there, each hole offers its own personality, from the daring blind par-3 “King” to the wide, sculpted fairways and massive greens that reward creative approaches. Bunkers are everywhere — artistic, challenging, and perfectly placed to make you think about every shot.
One unique feature at Sweetens is that every green has two hole locations and four sets of tees, ensuring no two rounds ever feel the same. Whether you’re chasing a low number, experimenting with different lines, or just soaking in the valley scenery, the course is designed to be as engaging on the 36th hole as it is on the first.
Sweetens shines as a match play venue, where strategy, risk-taking, and head-to-head battles make every hole a thrill.
Beyond the Golf
When you need a break between loops, Sweetens has you covered. The shed, which doubles as the pro shop, is loaded with some of the coolest gear in golf, from logoed hats and shirts to limited-edition merch you won’t find anywhere else. The separate covered pavilion is the perfect hangout spot for swapping stories, sipping bourbon, and regrouping before heading back out. The food truck serves up a fantastic smash burger, and the putting green is as much a social scene as it is a practice space.
Sweetens is a place where music is welcomed, laughter echoes across the valley, and the smell of a post-round cigar might drift through the air. If you’re lucky, someone might even pour you a shot of Sweetens Cove bourbon to celebrate an eagle or help you recover from a triple bogey. You’re also likely to be welcomed in to take a ceremonial shot of bourbon by a fellow golfer just to get the day started!
What’s Next for Sweetens Cove
The future is just as exciting as the present. Plans are underway to expand the property with a lighted par-3 short course, stay-and-play cabins, a restaurant and distillery, a winding putting course, a fishing dock, and even a skeet shooting range — all designed to elevate the experience while preserving the charm that makes Sweetens special.
A Place That Stays With You
Peyton Manning, Andy Roddick, and a group of investors may have purchased Sweetens Cove a few years ago, but the magic hasn’t changed. It’s still a gravel lot, a humble clubhouse, and nine holes that inspire every golfer who walks them.
For those who’ve been, Sweetens Cove isn’t just a golf course. It’s a memory machine — a place where strangers become friends, where laughter outshines the scorecard, and where you play until your hands are blistered and the sun calls it a day.
Once you’ve been, you’ll start planning your next trip before you’ve even left the parking lot.
